3 Ways To Reduce The Noise Of Your Window Air Conditioner

Blog

When you turn on your window air conditioner, you expect the system to work properly and run smoothly. However, if you hear any odd noises when turning it on, there could be something wrong. Not only is this bothersome, as it keeps you from getting a good night's sleep or enjoying time with your family, but it is also a sign that some minor repairs need to be done. Here are some easy ways to decrease the noise.

Check That it is Level

The first thing you should do when your window air conditioning unit is making a lot of noise is check where the unit is placed. It needs to be completely level with the window it is sitting in, otherwise, it will make odd noises. Since this is the easiest thing to check, it is best you start with it. Go to the window unit and look at it from a distance. If it looks level so far, go up to the unit and place a level on top of it. If the level says the unit is straight, it should be fine. However, if the level is showing it is tilted slightly, it is time to fix it. Lift up the unit from the window to see if there are any obstructions. This is often the culprit.

Make Sure the Screws Are Tight

Another common reason for the window A/C unit to be making noises while running is if there are screws loose. This is another easy fix. There will be screws all along the casing of the unit, and inside the unit where the filter and other mechanisms are. It is best to open the unit first and check to see if any of those screws are loose. Go ahead and use your screwdriver to rotate each screw to be sure it is nice and tight. Then place the front panel back on the unit and tighten those screws. Check for any other screws around the base of the unit, repeating the process. Turn the unit on to test it. If it is still making noise, continue to the final step.

Have Proper Ventilation

If the unit doesn't have proper ventilation, that could be the reason it is making too much noise. The first reason it could have poor ventilation and air circulation is if the air filter is clogged. If your unit has a reusable filter, remove it from the unit and clean it thoroughly. If it is one of the disposable varieties, throw it out and replace it with a new one. Also clean the outside of the unit on the front and back, as you could also get blockages there that are blocking air flow. Finally, check to see that the window is open enough for proper ventilation.
