Finding The Source Of Your Electric Baseboard Heating System's Low- Or No-Heat Condition

Blog

If you have electric baseboard heating in your home, and you recently noticed your units are not emitting as much warm air as they have in the past, you will most likely want to find a remedy in repairing them quickly. There are several reasons why electric baseboard heating units may not effectively be dispersing air at the temperature you desire. Here are some spots to check on to see if you can get the heat back to an acceptable level on your own.

Check Your Electrical Sources First

It is best to do an assessment of the wiring of the baseboard heating to ensure there are no spots where damage is present. If you have a pet that had chewed one of these wires, or if one had become crushed by a piece of furniture or a closed door, it will be necessary to call a heating repair specialist to get your heating unit back up and running. Unplug a baseboard heating unit before checking over the wire in detail for frays or crimps. It is also a good idea to check that your heating system's circuit breaker was not tripped, as this would result in a no-heat condition.

Take A Look At The Heater's Settings

It is possible the thermostat to your heating system had mistakenly been switched to a lower setting. Check that the temperature level is at your desired heat setting and turn it up a few degrees to see if you notice a difference in the heating of your home. If you still feel chilly, the thermostat may need to be checked in detail. Make sure each of your baseboard heaters' dampers are set to an open setting. If one had been shut off, the heat will primarily remain close to the unit itself instead of being transmitted into the room where it is located. A simple flip of the lever or switch to "on" will get the heat into the proper areas.

Do A Complete Clean Out

Cleaning out a baseboard heater will help it run efficiently. Debris like pet fur and household dust will accumulate on top of the heating coils within the unit. To remove this, unplug your unit and remove the covers that protect these coils. Use a soft-bristled vacuum cleaner brush attachment to remove dirt with ease. Hold the attachment slightly away from the coils so they do not bend should you hit them with the apparatus. Place the cover back on the unit and plug it back in to see if warm air is felt.
