Heating System Repair: 3 Common Heating System Problems And How To Fix Them

Blog

As winter draws closer, one of the things you need to pay close attention to is your heating system. Your heating unit could be the only reason you made it through the coldest months, and it is for this reason that you should take great care of it. Imagine it breaking down when you need it most. That would be terrible. To prevent such from happening, it is essential to look out for potential problems and deal with them before they escalate.

This article explores some of the most common problems your heating system may encounter and how to solve them.

System Won't Turn Off

If your heating unit runs and blows hot air without stopping, check the settings to ensure it is on "auto" and not "on." With the former, your system automatically goes off after attaining a specific temperature.

If the problem persists even after doing the above, this could be an indication that your thermostat is either incorrectly wired or broken. It could also indicate a faulty heating system blower. You will therefore need to correct the thermostat wiring before proceeding to reset it to default settings. If this too proves futile, it is time to get a new thermostat.

Your House Isn't Properly Heated

You may notice that your heating system isn't working as efficiently as it used to before. Some areas of your house may not be receiving sufficient heat. There are several reasons for this, such as dirty filters, clogged ductwork, faulty fan motor, belts, and bearings. Although it is easy to repair the air filters, ductwork and system issues require you to procure the services of a heating system repair technician.

The Vents Are Emitting Cool Air

Although leaking ducts could have an effect on the air temperature, there is a need to address the following:

  • Thermostat: check to ensure the thermostat is set at the correct temperature, then go ahead to detect any temperature changes. You should also check to see if the thermostat is set on "auto" instead of "on."

  • Air filter: because of the debris and dirt they collect, it is imperative to replace air filters every three months. Clogged filters could be the reason why your system is emitting cool air.

  • Fuel: your system requires fuel to operate. The absence of power renders its operation insufficient.

Other signs to look out for include foul odors, mold, and escalating energy bills. Remember that dealing with issues before they become severe saves you many expenses in the long run.
