The 3 Steps To Properly Maintaining Your Heating System

Blog

Properly maintaining your heating system will not only help to prevent a system failure, but it can also help you to keep your monthly energy bills to a minimum by ensuring that your heating system functions as energy-efficiently as possible. This maintenance will require you to complete three simple steps. You can learn more about each of these three steps below.

Step #1: Clean Or Change Your Air Filter

Many problems with your home's heating system can be prevented by simply taking the time to clean or replace your air filter each time it becomes soiled. While some filters will need to be replaced as often as every month, there are also filters on the market that are designed to last several months before needing to be replaced. If you are not sure whether or not it is time to replace your air filter, simply remove the filter from your furnace and hold it up to the light. If you can easily see through the filter, you are okay to put the filter back into the furnace. However, if you cannot easily see through the filter, you will need to either clean it or replace it.

Step #2: Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned

If your home's ventilation system becomes clogged with dust and other debris, it will be impossible for your heating system to effectively deliver warm air throughout your home. That is why it is so important to have your air ducts cleaned each heating season. In addition to allowing heated air to easily pass through the system, having your air ducts cleaned will also help to improve the air quality inside your home and prevent potentially dangerous mold spores from being distributed into the air you breathe. This maintenance task will require the use of special equipment and will therefore need to be performed by a professional.

Step #3: Have Your System Professionally Inspected And Maintained

The ability to complete necessary repairs before they result in a system failure is an important part of keeping your home warm this winter and keeping your overall repair bills to a minimum. That is why your heating maintenance should include a professional inspection before the beginning of the heating season. During this inspection, your HVAC contractor will look for any parts that have become worn and will need to be replaced in the near future. You can also expect that your HVAC contractor will check to make sure the system is properly ventilated and that there are no gas leaks or other concerns that could put your safety at risk.
